Dates: Mon 6 – Fri 10 Aug, 2012
9.30am - 3.30pm (with 1 hour for lunch)
Cost: £192 for 5-day course or
£45 per day
This popular course has now been running for a number of years, and quickly sells out. It is ideal for both experienced knitters and those who may be completely new to the craft so why not come along to enjoy the experience of a full week of machine knitting? Brother punchcard machines are available, or if you prefer you can bring your own machine. Uppingham Yarns, one of the biggest outlets for coned yarns in the UK, and Yeoman Yarns are both nearby, so this course is an excellent opportunity to stock up your yarn and learn.
Renowned tutor Beryl Jarvis has run courses at Uppingham Summer School since 2003. She holds the Women's Institute Craft, Demonstrators and Instructors certificates and travels all around the country to give demonstrations. Beryl has also made a DVD a published a book on machine knitting.
Materials will be available (£10-£12) or you may bring your own.
Monday and Tuesday
These first two days will be concentrating on basic techniques suitable for beginners or those knitters who would like a refresher. More experienced knitters can join the beginners to renew their skills, work on some interesting hems or follow Beryl's Info Sheets to try out new skills.
Wednesday
Every machine can produce a variety of lace fabrics. Today will be a lace day covering as many variations of machine knitted lace as possible.
Thursday and Friday
Over these two days ribber work will be the main feature. Topics will include setting up the ribber, knitting basic ribs, buttonholes, shaping on the ribber, knitting a variety of ribbed fabrics, including jacquard, plus more. Beginners and those without a ribber can continue with, or retry, tasks introduced during the week, or try something completely different.
