Chicken Keeping for Beginners and Novices (Tues 12 Aug)
10.30am-1.00/2.00-4.30pm £70

A new and unique course for Uppingham Summer School. Are you thinking about keeping chickens but not yet got round to it? Or do you already keep chickens and are learning the hard way how to look after them? Either way, this is the course for you – don’t make your chickens suffer while you learn by trial and error but learn the right way from the start for more productive egg supply, happier and healthier chickens etc.

During this intensive course we cover the benefits and rewards of keeping chickens; their basic needs and regular care routine (daily, weekly, monthly); chickens’ housing needs and the predators you will be protecting them from. You will learn how to handle and train your chickens; what food, drink, supplements and medication they need; what internal and external parasites you may have to deal with; how to introduce new chickens to your existing stock; pecking order and learn about cockerels, broody hens etc. For those starting chicken keeping, we’ll teach you about different breeds and how to select a particular breed to satisfy your requirements, environment etc. We’ll consider the cost of keeping chickens and the excitement of getting your first eggs... and you will have the opportunity to handle chickens yourself by holding the tutor’s hens. Tutor:Val Moody.

Bridge

Bridge. Card icons Bridge is an absorbing game enjoyed by millions world-wide. Fascinating, frustrating, exciting by turn it even has the approval of the medical world – studies in the USA claim that bridge both boosts the immune system (!) and aids the brain generally. Certainly you may feel sceptical about these reports originating in California, but the fact remains that the game of bridge can get you hooked for life. You are never too old to learn, and never too young either. The English Bridge Union has a membership in excess of 300,000 and an age range of about 8 to 98.

Our bridge courses are all taught by England international Paul Bowyer, offering you the opportunity to learn this remarkable game, the most skilful card game on Earth.

One of the advantages of doing these five-day courses is that you don’t have to turn up with a partner, although you are most welcome to do so – we should be able to cope with both single players and pairs.
