8043
Founded in 1999, Uppingham’s National Young Pianists Week (NYPW) attracts international acclaim for the positive impact it makes on developing pianists.
What Does National Young Pianists’ Week offer?
Under the leadership of the school’s Head of Keyboard Studies,Alexis Ffrench, NYPW is an intensive piano course for developing and advanced pianists, offering creatively stimulating programmes for all young pianists. The course is designed to offer the student maximum choice within a challenging and innovative programme whatever their level.
As a result, young pianists have travelled from every continent to experience the unique atmosphere and study with some of the world’s leading practitioners and teachers, in a truly historic and inspirational setting.
Who Can Attend?
The course is aimed at any young pianist aged 9 to 21. Exceptions have been made to include particularly talented participants younger than 9 if they are capable of coping with the musical and social demands of the course.
What Do They Do Each Day?
The programme offers a balance of individual tuition, piano master-classes, lectures, plus the opportunity to study specialist activities such as jazz, chamber, voice, technical etc – all culminating with a recorded end of course concert featuring all attendees.
The week will include composition seminars, ranging from traditional orchestration techniques to film scoring and use of cutting edge music technology. Students will be given opportunities to work and perform with the musicians in residence, as well as professional singers in the vocal accompaniment master class.

Which level?
Each student will work in a group appropriate to his/her level, ranging from intermediate to post Diploma.
Private Tuition
Within the course fee each student will benefit from one private one-to-one lesson with elite teaching staff with additional lessons available for an extra fee, payable with the deposit. Most students find these sessions particularly valuable.
Leisure time
The musical side of the week is intensive so we are mindful of the fact that participants also need a varied programme of leisure activities we include a range of options such as swimming, tennis, football and other non-active pursuits such as web-surfing, games etc.
Day Student or Residential?
Most students attending NYPW tend to opt for the residential option (further details on page 28). However, if you live nearby, you are welcome to attend on a nonresidential basis. Non-residential students are asked to bring a packed lunch but drinks at lunch-time and during drinks breaks will be provided.
Concerts
There will be many student concert opportunities throughout the week. On the final day, we shall have an Open Day Celebration of Young Pianists in which all NYPW students will have the opportunity to perform. These performances will be recorded for inclusion on the NYPW MySpace web site.
